Academy District 20 Transportation Facility: A Milestone in Operational Excellence

At Nunn Construction, we believe that every project is an opportunity to build not just structures, but stronger communities and smarter systems. Our recent collaboration with Academy District 20 exemplifies this vision through the development of a state-of-the-art Transportation Facility that redefines efficiency, comfort, and service for the district’s growing needs.

Building for the Future

Academy District 20’s previous transportation center had faithfully served its community for nearly 40 years. With aging infrastructure and evolving demands, the district set out to modernize and expand their capabilities—and we were honored to bring that vision to life.

The new facility features an impressive 18,000 square foot pre-engineered metal building designed for both functionality and future growth. It houses eight full-service bus maintenance bays, a dedicated equipment storage bay, and an advanced fluid distribution and compressed air system, complete with retractable reel stations and an exterior fill/extraction point. Complementing the technical build is a newly remodeled administrative wing, featuring upgraded offices, a driver lounge, a new dispatch center, and training classrooms.

Smart Design for Seamless Operations

One of the defining features of this project is its thoughtful spatial separation between the bus maintenance functions and administrative areas. This layout minimizes congestion and promotes more efficient workflows—a critical consideration for a facility that remained operational throughout construction.

Our team also self-performed a complex 225-linear-foot concrete retaining wall, 12 feet high and 1 foot thick, strategically placed to manage the existing site’s elevation while minimizing the project’s overall environmental footprint. This solution reduced earthwork and stormwater permitting requirements, showcasing the power of creative engineering.

Overcoming Challenges with Precision

Executing a major renovation and new build within an active school district demanded meticulous coordination and adaptability. Our team leveraged night and weekend shifts to complete demolition activities without disrupting ongoing operations. A tight site footprint allowed us to safely navigate around daily bus schedules, ensuring student transportation remained uninterrupted.

In total, we exported over 8,000 cubic yards of soil from the elevated building site—no small feat, but one handled seamlessly thanks to careful planning and execution.

Lighting the Way Forward

Although not formally certified under sustainability programs, the facility includes energy-efficient features such as a complete upgrade to LED lighting across the entire campus. This modernization supports long-term cost savings and contributes to a more comfortable and safer working environment.

Collaboration at Every Turn

The success of this project reflects a true team effort. Nunn Construction collaborated closely with FBT Architects, the D20 Bond Management Office, and the district’s transportation staff to ensure the final product met operational needs and exceeded expectations. Clear communication through the bond office and on-the-ground involvement from mechanics and staff led to a highly tailored outcome.

A Lasting Impact

The new Academy District 20 Transportation Facility isn’t just a building—it’s a catalyst for better service. The modernized infrastructure allows for faster, more efficient maintenance, happier drivers, and improved conditions for all transportation staff. As a result, the district is better positioned to serve students with greater reliability and care.

Feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with mechanics and staff expressing excitement and pride in their new space. We recently celebrated a ribbon-cutting for this impactful project with members of ASD20, marking the culmination of hard work and collaboration.

Looking Ahead

For the Nunn Construction team, this project stands as a testament to what’s possible through smart design, stakeholder collaboration, and unwavering commitment to quality. The lessons we’ve learned in metal building sequencing and fluid system installations will inform future innovations—and we’re excited to keep building what matters.
