Samuel Freudenthal Memorial Library Gains National Recognition

American Library Association Design Showcase honors project built by Nunn Construction

Nunn Construction is proud to announce that the Samuel Freudenthal Memorial Library at Trinidad State College, renovated by Nunn and designed by Denver-based studiotrope Design Collective, has been recognized as one of North America’s most outstanding library projects. The renovation was selected for the 2025 American Library Association (ALA) Design Showcase, which highlights the year’s most impressive new and renovated libraries.

Originally constructed in 1967, the Freudenthal Library reopened in spring 2025 as the first major construction project on Trinidad State’s campus in over 50 years, aligning with the college’s centennial celebration. Nunn Construction partnered with Trinidad State and studiotrope Design Collective to bring new life to this historic building, transforming it into a vibrant centerpiece for learning, collaboration, and community.

“We take pride in delivering projects that not only meet functional needs but also inspire the people who use them,” said Vinnie Mattivi. Vice President, Pueblo Operations at Nunn Construction. “The Freudenthal Library is a shining example of how thoughtful construction and design can create spaces that enrich education and bring communities together.”

Project Highlights

  • Size: 12,750 square feet
  • Cost: $5.4 million
  • Architect: studiotrope Design Collective (sDC)
  • Builder: Nunn Construction

The reinvented library features a glowing “crystal box” entryway that serves as a beacon on campus, flexible study environments ranging from collaborative spaces to quiet zones, a student lounge with a fireplace and restored mosaic, a makerspace, outdoor courtyard with views of Fishers Peak, and a renovated lower level that will house the Louden-Henritze Archaeology Museum.

The project not only preserves the historic significance of the original structure but also positions the library as a modern hub for creativity, innovation, and community engagement.
