Construction Wraps Up at Southwest Memorial Hospital

Southwest Memorial Hospital has served the Cortez and surrounding community in its current location since 1975. Due to the growing needs of the community, as well as advancements in medical care and technology, the hospital was in need of expansion and modernization to provide satisfactory care to its community. The brand new Medical Office Building and Inpatient Wing are now complete, providing increased comfort, safety, and privacy for the patients and visitors of SWMH.

The two-story, 25,000 sq.ft. Medical Office Building began seeing patients in May. The facility is strategically located directly adjacent to the main hospital for easy access to additional services, and houses 18 medical providers under one roof. The one-stop-shop improves patient care, provides ample workspace for staff with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains, and includes rows of exam room resulting in decreased waiting time for patients.

The 13-bed Inpatient Wing replaces the second floor in the existing hospital building. The new wing provides improved security and safety, expanded areas for family waiting, more advanced intensive care units, and a new family birthing center with full service labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum rooms.

Of the 45 subcontractors that performed on the project, 65 percent were from the region, including several from Cortez.

The project was completed on time and under budget. The final piece of the project is the completion of the new main entrance and lobby, expected to be complete in August. “This project was a team effort and a real source of pride for the community” said Rick Fleming, Project Manager for Nunn Construction. “The technology and natural light throughout the buildings are standout features.”
